Families should embrace the belief that Children belong to the community

There is hidden wisdom in the saying says it takes a village to raise a child. What triggered such a saying? It could be the realization that no single family can meet the needs of their child well-being. As it is also taught in the Scripture “Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray” (Proverb 22:6). This was the standard of the past that ensured that every child was supported to thrive.

However, individualism is killing the social norms of nurturing children. According to the Oxford Dictionary, individualism is “a social theory favoring freedom of action for individuals over collective or state control.” This raises the question of how much an individual can do to guarantee child well-being? Studies show that countries are re-engaging and working hard to support the family as the core institution responsible of providing nurturing care (WHO 2018). This can be possible when all stakeholders play their roles collaboratively.

CALISCO has learned that to change and achieve desired results, we should start with a perception that influences intellectual and emotional beliefs (Henman 2020). Today is an opportune time to reflect on what has influenced your past decisions concerning the nurturing of your children. There is a need to critically assess our belief system and see if we still uphold the positive societal norms of our fore bearers. Positive traditions are resourceful to every generation, help your child develop communal responsibility.
