The greatest concern in any family is how to deal with the differences of every member. If care is not taken, family members will assume that everyone is the same and should behave the same way. It could also be the case that parents assume that children will behave the same way at all stages of their development. The truth is that every individual is different, and every stage of development comes with different challenges. Understanding and appreciating differences in the family is a big win for everyone. Hence, what should remain the same is the command of our Lord. As the Scripture directs, every family should pay heed to love God with all their heart, soul, and strength and teach their children to do the same(Deuteronomy 6:4-9). Love causes a connection that enables individuals to feel for each other without judging them.
However, where there is no love, individuals become judgmental failing to be compassionate to each other. In such a situation, mistakes are used to pin down the other. The more someone feels that they are despised because of their weakness, the more they withdraw from the family engagement. This is risky to the individual since they will look for other ways to fill the void in their life which will cost the entire family in some way.
CALISCO believes that it’s normal for children to make mistakes. This will give them the opportunity to ask for help to be guided and to grow. Imagine a case where parents expect children to be perfect. Could there be a need for parenting? Looking at mistakes differently, it could be a source of bonding when both parents and children engage in negotiating the way forward. Negotiation can only be possible if both parents and children enter into a conversation without a judgmental mindset. Thus, being ready to learn from mistakes will enhance collaboration in solving family challenges. The worst mistake that should not be tolerated in a family is to think that there is a one-fits-all solution to all challenges. Make a choice to start transforming the lives of your children through accommodating their mistakes.
